Executive Summary
A Group Purchasing Organization industry-sponsored study reports that GPO-negotiated prices save U.S. hospitals and other types of health systems $36 billion annually, including $1.9 billion in the cardiac implant space, $840 million in orthopedic implants, $8.5 billion from non-physician preference item medical/surgical equipment and $6.8 billion for hospital pharmaceutical purchases. The remainder of the savings comes from contracts for miscellaneous products and services, including computers, food and janitorial services
