Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn., Feb. 4 introduces the Food Safety Modernization Act, a bill to split FDA into two agencies under HHS: a food regulatory agency called the Food Safety Administration, and a drug and device regulatory agency, to retain the name Food and Drug Administration. Triggered by the recent peanut butter salmonella outbreak, the bill aims to improve food safety, an area that is "impaired because it chronically has been treated as a secondary concern compared to FDA's drug and medical device programs," DeLauro said.
