Executive Summary

Advanced Medical Optics, recently acquired by Abbott, receives FDA approval Jan. 16 for its Tecnis multifocal intraocular lens (IOL) for cataract patients and plans to begin shipping to U.S. surgeons in early 2009. Tecnis is indicated for the visual correction of aphakia in patients with or without presbyopia. The firm notes that nearly 9 out of 10 patients never wear glasses after surgery.
