FDA grants de novo 510(k) clearance June 21 to INRange Systems' Electronic Medication Management Assistant (EMMA), a programmable device that stores and dispenses prescription medications for in-home use. EMMA uses a Web-based application to allow physicians to remotely schedule medications and alter individual doses. The device emits an audible alert when the pills are scheduled to be taken and releases them onto a delivery tray. Health care professionals are provided with a history showing when the patient has accessed the medication. Each EMMA unit holds a month's supply of up to 10 prescriptions.
