Executive Summary
Phase I studies to assess feasibility of identifying genetic profiles of individuals predisposed to develop latex sensitivity allergies will start in September 2001. The project - a collaboration between OST, the Office of Surveillance and Biometrics, the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, and a biotech company, Phase-1 Molecular Toxicology - aims to "develop a gene expression pattern characteristic of latex sensitivity," OST notes. Should the Phase I study, which includes 12 subjects, prove successful, OST would look into possible gender differences in gene expression of the allergy in the second phase, staffers suggest
