Scimed division's radiofrequency-based percutaneous transmyocardial revascularization (PTMR) ablation catheter offers a highly effective, low-cost alternative to laser-based PTMR devices, Robert Schwartz, Mayo Clinic and Foundation, says March 10 at the ACC conference. Results from ongoing animal studies show that Scimed's 500 kilohertz RF ablation catheter is "eminently controllable" and "very low cost...using a driver box readily available in most surgical labs," Schwartz said. The procedure has "a very high success rate because of its controllability and because of the fact that one does not need fibers as in the laser based context, but simply an electrode in a catheter," he explains
