Executive Summary
Laparoscopic hysterectomy supply costs were almost $1,200 greater than the supply costs for conventional abdominal hysterectomy in a comparison study conducted at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center and reported in the Aug. 15 New England Journal of Medicine. The study concluded that in general, laparoscopically assisted vaginal hysterectomy hospital and total costs and charges are "substantially higher" than those for either vaginal hysterectomy or abdominal hysterectomy.
