Executive Summary
INTEGRATED SURGICAL'S ROBOTIC HIP REPLACEMENT SYSTEM GRABS $2.1 MIL. NIST GRANT through the National Institute of Standards and Technology's Advanced Technology Program (ATP). The R&D funds for a robotic system to be used in revision total hip replacement surgery were awarded to device co-developers Integrated Surgical Systems, Inc. and IBM. The two companies are contributing matching funds to the three-year, $4.2 mil. project, which has the goal of developing and demonstrating "a computer-integrated robot system that can assist physicians in achieving accurate implant fit, cut down on complications as well as blood loss and x-ray exposure, and potentially shorten hospital stays."
