Executive Summary
House Government Operations/Information, Justice, Transportation and Agriculture Subcommittee, chaired by Rep. Gary Condit (D-Calif.), is considering holding a hearing addressing wireless communication device interference with electric medical devices before the current session of Congress adjourns, FDAers say. The subcommittee, which has oversight jurisdiction over the Federal Communications Commission, plans to ask FCC and FDA officials to testify at the hearing. Rep. Condit recently requested a General Accounting Office audit regarding the EMI issue that would evaluate the scope of the problem and look into such issues as "whether government agencies are adequately monitoring and responding to the situation" ("The Gray Sheet" Aug. 1, p. 1)
