Executive Summary
BREAST IMPLANT GLOBAL SETTLEMENT WILL BE RULED ON BY SEPT. 1 after U.S District Court of Northern Alabama Judge Samuel Pointer considers whether the settlement is fair to women from other countries. After a three-day hearing, held beginning Aug. 18 in Birmingham, Pointer said Aug. 23 that he will issue a ruling by Sept. 1 on whether the silicone implant settlement is "fair, reasonable, adequate, and in the best interests of class members." Final approval of the class action case appears likely, but Pointer said that while he considers the $4.25 bil. settlement to be in the best interest of the American litigants, the question of fairness to foreign claimants caused him to delay his ruling.
