TYMPANOSTOMY TUBES INAPPROPRIATELY RECOMMENDED FOR CHILDREN in 23% of 6,429 cases reviewed in a study published in the April 27 issue of The Journal of the American Medical Association. Analyzing data on the appropriateness of placing tubes in the ear drums of children younger than 16 years, Lawrence Kleinman, MD, Harvard Medical School, et al., concluded that "almost one quarter of all proposed tympanostomy tube surgeries should not have been performed."
