The US Senate on 21 November settled with the House on another continuing resolution (CR) maintaining a 2019 funding level for the Food and Drug Administration and other agencies for another four weeks, at a total of $3.06bn, thereby averting a shutdown.
But with the next budget deadline coming on 20 December – or nearly three months into the new 2020 fiscal year – the shortfall makes it less likely that the FDA will be able to support planned 2020 programs. Among the 2020 program spending planned by the FDA’s device center was an additional $4m on medical device cyber reviews, $2m more to support medtech manufacturing, and a $1m increase for laboratory science
