Ethicon Expects Powered Circular Stapler To Address A Common Source Of Cancer Surgery Complications

The J&J subsidiary has added power, less-invasive staples and gripping technology to circular staplers to make them easier to operate correctly

The Echelon circular powered stapler for colorectal, gastric and thoracic surgery features Ethicon’s 3D stapling technology to evenly distribute compression and a gripping-surface technology that reduces compressive forces on tissue. The company expects the new system will reduce leaks at the staple line without compromising blood or lymphatic perfusion.

Ethicon Inc., a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson expects its new Echelon circular powered stapler will overcome the limitations of current circular staplers that cause many significant complications.

Surgeons use circular staplers to reconnect healthy tissue after disease tissue has been removed while maintaining fluid perfusion through the tissue. They are most commonly used in surgeries treating colorectal, gastric or esophageal cancers, but they are also often used in bariatric surgeries, according to Ethicon
