Senate Committee Signals Approval Of Seema Verma To Run CMS, But Most Dems Will Vote 'No'

At a Senate Finance Committee markup on the confirmation of Seema Verma to become CMS administrator, a majority of senators signaled approval of Verma, but most Democrats said they will vote "no" in response to their dissatisfaction with her written answers on issues, including past conflicts-of-interest, ACA repeal and Medicaid changes. A binding committee vote is expected March 2.

The Senate Finance Committee is expected to approve former Indiana health-care consultant Seema Verma to lead the US Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, with a final vote most likely coming March 2, a committee staffer said.

The panel held a markup session March 1, but Chairman Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, could not gather a sufficient quorum of Republican members for a final confirmation vote to pass the CMS nominee to the full Senate for consideration. All eight Republicans who were present favored her confirmation, but all Democrats except one, Tom Carper of Delaware, signaled opposition
