The final two months of 2016 spelled a busy time for deal-making and forging alliances. Google's life-sciences division, Verily, which has been busy partnering up with health-care companies throughout the year, managed to squeeze another agreement in before the year was out.

This time, Verily's partner was with Optos, the UK-based retinal imaging specialist that was acquired by Japanese group Nikon in 2015. Optos and Verily will collaborate to develop technology and solutions for improving screening for diabetic-related eye diseases – diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema
