There are essentially two kinds of fractures. One type is usually in the middle of long bones, with the bone splitting into a few large fragments that are put back together with current orthopedic products such as screws and plates. The other type of fracture involves crush injuries in the spine and at the ends of long bones, called compression or depression fractures. "While split fractures are well-treated today, the orthopedics industry has not provided effective tools to treat crush injuries," notes Karen Talmadge, president and co-founder of Kyphon Inc.
