What Surgeons Don’t Know About Orthopedic Implant Prices

A survey published in Health Affairs finds many orthopedic surgeons don’t know the prices of the implants they employ. The researchers and others point to price ignorance as an important challenge to containing overall health care costs, but industry says the issue is being overhyped.

Most of the 503 orthopedic surgeons queried in a recent survey say cost is an important determining factor in the device selection process, but only a minority could correctly estimate the price of the devices they implant.
