A new analysis published online last month in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) raises important questions about the growing use of diagnostic imaging procedures in the US and the resultant rise in exposure to low-dose ionizing radiation from these tests. The study comes at a time when the imaging industry is already facing several challenges—battered by the recession and square in the sights of US health reformers seeking ways to reduce health care costs. Athough the new study has drawn fire from the radiology community, which takes issue with some of the methodology and conclusions, the findings could bolster the leverage of those in favor of reining in imaging procedures.
