Targeting Acute Wounds with Advanced Technologies

Acute wound care will continue to evolve as hospitals face increasing pressure from payors and patient safety advocates to address the issue of surgical wounds and surgical site infections. CMS has added SSIs to the list of preventable, hospital-acquired conditions that it will no longer cover. A number of companies are seizing the opportunity to develop technologies that can help hospitals and patients avoid these costly conditions.

Acute wound care has evolved considerably over the years and will continue to do so, as hospitals now face increasing pressure from payors and patient safety advocates to address the issue of surgical wounds and surgical site infections (SSIs). In fact, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is now targeting certain SSIs for payment reform under the new hospital-acquired condition payment rules, and these efforts could expand in the coming years. Infection impairs every aspect of wound healing and is a major source of morbidity and mortality
