The beginning of the New Year provides a fresh start for dealing with the challenges and dilemmas that developed in the previous year. As 2009 begins, it is apparent many of health care’s key issues will be affected by the economy, which began to struggle in 2008. However, other concerns also will drive change in the industry, the most notable being a new administration in Washington, DC, that inherits a health care system desperate for reform. Reducing costs and increasing patient safety will continue to be the chief drivers of reform, and although the health care industry has been working on these issues for several years, 2009 could mark a turning point in these efforts. Several initiatives now underway could directly affect the way medical device manufacturers do business and may test some companies.
