A percutaneous intravascular cardioverter-defibrillator (PICD) matched a traditional ICD in a small defibrillation threshold study, and the investigators believe it could eventually be a safer alternative to traditional implantable cardioverter defibrillators.
The PICD, developed by InnerPulse Inc., includes a 24 French isodiametric titanium pulse generator segment, a 9 French silicone rubber lead, and a tapered cephalic silicone anchor. Individual titanium cans house the batteries and capacitors and are connected by flexible segments, allowing the device to conform to the vasculature as it is delivered through the femoral vein.
