AliveCor Inc. launched the third generation of its FDA-cleared AliveCor smartphone-linked electrocardiogram monitor Dec. 18, which it says is 50 percent thinner and 40 percent lighter than prior versions. The monitor records, stores and transfers single-channel ECG rhythms via the AliveECG App, compatible with iOS and most Android mobile devices, with the goal of detecting the presence of atrial fibrillation. The first wireless, smartphone-based ECG, AliveCor gained its original 510(k) clearance in 2012, and it gained clearance for an app-based AF-detection algorithm in September of this year. Users of the monitor are now recording 130,000 ECGs per month, the company says.
