A report posted Feb. 25 by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality projects the number of hospital admissions for first-time knee replacements due to osteoarthritis would reach 176,000 per quarter by the end of 2012, or 704,000 for the year. By comparison, the rate in 2004 was 104,000 per quarter and 416,000 annually. The number of hospital discharges with primary knee arthroplasty for osteoarthritis has also increased over time, from about 94,500 discharges per quarter in 2003 to 155,000 discharges per quarter in 2010.
