Feds Get In The Game To Fund Digital Tools For Mental Health Monitoring, Treatment

Among projects recently funded by the National Institutes of Mental Health are studies to assess a gaming system to evaluate and treat depression, and smartphone tools to correlate behavioral data with a patient’s mental state with enough precision to drive treatment for bipolar disorder. The institute says it wants to improve the current “bricks-and-mortar” mental health care system.

The National Institutes of Mental Health is investing in research intended to develop digital health tools as legitimate and clinically accepted products for screening and treating psychiatric disorders.

Researchers at Johns Hopkins have used a robotic system to autonomously perform a key part of gallbladder surgery without a surgeon's hand. Lead author Axel Krieger says it could take five to 10 years before an autonomous robotic system will reach human trials and expects regulatory hurdles.
