Consumer products firm Spectrum Brands Holdings Inc. acquires a 56% stake in light-based hair removal device maker Shaser Bioscience Inc. for $50 million, the firm announced Nov. 12. The deal builds on the firms’ existing commercial partnership, established in 2008, through which they jointly developed and brought to market the Remington iLight Pro light-based, home-use hair removal system. Headquartered in Boston, privately held Shaser launched the 510(k)-cleared device in the U.S. in 2011 and in Europe in 2010. The purchase dovetails with Spectrum’s plans to build a consumables business within its Remington personal care division and develop a full line of energy-based aesthetic dermatology devices and other products using Shaser technology to address signs of aging, acne and blemishes, spider veins and other aesthetic applications, Spectrum said.
