Capsule endoscopy device maker Given Imaging Ltd. acquired SmartPill Corp. for $6 million on Oct. 4. The latter firm’s 510(k)-cleared SmartPill device is a wireless, ingestible capsule that uses sensor technology to measure pH, pressure and temperature in the gastrointestinal tract to assess gastric emptying and total GI transit times and help in the evaluation of motility disorders like gastroparesis and constipation. The single-use SmartPill, which transmits data to a recorder worn by a patient, “is an excellent strategic fit with Given Imaging’s proprietary technology and extensive portfolio of GI diagnostic tools,” said Given Imaging CEO Homi Shamir. Given Imaging notes that it expects in 2013 the acquisition will contribute “low single-digit revenue in millions of dollars.”
