Medicare Fee-For-Service Program Still A Key Focus At CMS

Center for Medicare Director Jonathan Blum spoke during the Medicare-Medicaid Payment Incentives and Penalties Summit May 30 in Washington, D.C.

Despite the buzz surrounding accountable care organizations, bundled payments and value-based purchasing, the Medicare agency still considers fee-for-service reimbursement a cornerstone of its payment policy, a top official said last week.

“There is some conversation that the fee-for-service model is dead” as Medicare transitions to new care and payment models, said Jonathan Blum, CMS deputy administrator and director of the Center for Medicare
