While the timing of regulations for a mandatory unique device identifier system remains mired in ambiguity, several hospitals in the Midwest are getting set to launch a mini-UDI program under an FDA contract focusing on coronary stents.
The effort out of the Mercy health care system, consisting of 31 hospitals and 200 outpatient facilities in Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Kansas*, is intended as a demonstration project to help troubleshoot UDIs before a nationwide system is launched, with a focus on linking UDIs to patient electronic health records
