The U.K.’s Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency issued an alert Feb. 28 recommending that patients with metal-on-metal hip replacements, including J&J/DePuy’s ASR hips, be monitored annually for life. The agency found that a small number of patients with the implants may develop progressive soft tissue reactions to the wear debris associated with the implants. For specific types, MHRA recommends magnetic resonance imaging or ultrasound exams, blood metal ion level tests and possible revision surgery.
